One thing is for sure: if Wayne Rooney is given the all-clear by the docs today and if Manchester United allow him to play in the World Cup, English fans will become insufferable in their boasts on being favourites to win the World Cup.
I know, because I plan to be leading the hubbub.
How important is Rooney to England’s chances? As a new kid thrown in at the deep end in Euro 2004, Rooney was the star in a tired and out-of-sorts England lineup. Eriksson and Beckham were blamed for much of England’s misfortunes, but the fact is that the whole team failed to gel. This time around, Rooney will be the gem in a very fine-tuned squad that has several of their key players getting into the form of their lives at the right time.
David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Joe Cole, John Terry, Paul Robinson – Expect these guys to be in the thick of things if England are to get anywhere near the quarter-finals. And if they have to go beyond, well…they have Rooney for then.
And if this is anything to go by…
Boy wonder should be doing fine.
