England fans have not had much to smile about in recent times. The Three Lions have been playing below their capabilities for the past 18 years or so. Their one flourish? At Euro 2004, a certain boy named Wayne Rooney mesmerized every England fan with two absolute brilliant performances.
It was generally thought that the brilliance, flair and vision of this boy would help England lift the European Championships. But an injury in the early moments of the quarter final against Portugal saw those dreams vanish. England would go on to lose on penalties.
Rooney had his best two games for England in that tournament. It was also just about the only time when he lined up for England playing behind a solid, reliable and fit striker – Michael Owen. He has hardly played in the hole for England since, but, according to the Daily Mail, he will be asked to play in that position when England take on the United States tomorrow.
It will surely come as good news to any England fan that Rooney will return to the position in which he had established himself as one of football’s finest talents for both club and country. Fabio Capello said yesterday that he intends to take England to the World Cup final in two years time and he will need all the help he can get to make that target a reality given how England has performed in the past year.
