Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann has pushed for Rafa Benitez to be considered as a leading candidate for the top job at the currently rudderless Manchester United.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Hamann claimed that the former Liverpool boss and the struggling champions would be a ‘good match’, and that despite Benitez’ run-ins with former United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, the Spaniard could be the answer for the club,

“Rafa Benitez is in Italy at Napoli but his family still lives in the north west and he has always made it clear that he would love to return to the Premier League at some stage.

“The way it is going at Liverpool, I don’t think he will be there any time soon and he has been at Chelsea, so there are not too many clubs out there for him. I don’t think Arsenal will suit him.

“He, and Manchester United, will be a very good match. He had a few run-ins with Fergie but he only pointed out a few facts, as he would say.

“If I was a United fan I would want somebody who gives you the best possible chance to get back in the Champions League.”

Current Napoli boss Benitez spent last season at Stamford Bridge in what was an ultimately fruitful spell as interim coach, with the Spaniard leading the Blues to Europa League glory, and finishing in third place in the league.

He also guided bitter rivals Liverpool to the Champions League in 2005, and his appointment at Manchester United would surely be met with outrage and derision by the fans considering his ties with the Anfield outfit, and that the 54-year-old was seen in such bad light by Sir Alex during previous clashes.
