Where do Liverpool and City’s star signings rank in Premier League transfer records?

Raheem Sterling’s £44m move from Liverpool to Manchester City broke a long-standing transfer record. For the last four years, Liverpool’s £35m signing of Andy Carroll was the most expensive English transfer in history.

The West Ham striker, who is arguably one of the worst flops in recent times, must be glad to be shot of that ‘accolade’! The pressure and the spotlight now falls on the 20 year-old Sterling shoulders, and while he hasn’t yet hit top form for his new side in the first few games of the 2015/16 season, his raw talent cannot be discounted. If ever there was a big money signing with time on his side.

Liverpool’s Christian Benteke, signed for £32.5m, is now the most expensive Belgian! The 24 year old tops Chelsea’s Eden Hazard by 500,000. Scorer of 49 goals in just 100 games for Aston Villa, Benteke is a force to be reckoned with. You wonder how he and Daniel Sturridge will complement each other when the England man finally returns from injury. A pretty scary thought for Liverpool’s Premier League rivals.

But can you remember how much Sturridge cost Liverpool in 2013…?

Records are meant to be broken, even the most obscure. Jordan and Andre Ayew have become the most expensive brothers in Premier League history in one summer. Aston Villa spent £8.5m on Jordan, enough to take the pair over the line despite Andre’s free transfer to Swansea.

And what a free transfer! Andre Ayew has been something of a revelation for Swansea so far this season, terrorizing Chelsea in his first match (bagging a goal at Stamford Bridge), and his second in the 2-0 win over Newcastle. He’s already proving to be a dynamic yet reliable outlet on the wing.

Kevin De Bruyne of Wolfsburg has been very strongly linked with a big money move to Manchester City, and should a deal go through, you can be sure that it’ll eclipse the £32.5m Benteke deal. He would be comfortably the most expensive Belgian in the history of football, with a deal in the region of £58m said to be near completion. But do you think the former Chelsea man is worth it?

Chelsea themselves are rumoured to be thinking about splashing the cash, with Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba said to be a target for the champions. That potential deal would potentially break their club transfer record, if reports are be believed. John Stones, meanwhile, could be set to become one of the worlds most expensive defenders if Chelsea have their way.

Transfer markets are rarely dull, and there’s enough here to suggest that we’re far from finished this summer!
