Manchester United transfer news

After weeks of constant speculation, done deal or agreement reached type stories being published in the media, it seems like the transfer saga of Nicolas Gaitan has somehow cooled down.

The situation in brief:

Benfica want to sell Gaitan in the summer. The Argentine has been with the club for the past five years, but the club’s financial situation is such, they are desperate to sell him to a big European club. Manchester United and Chelsea were linked with a move, while there were reports that Benfica officials were in London last month to negotiate a deal for Gaitan. La Liga giants Valencia are also interested in the Argentine forward.

Gaitan himself admitted that he wants to stay at Benfica but he can hardly do anything if the club pushes him out. An agreement had been been (if the reports are to be believed) with United, but with a clause – United would only make a move for Gaitan if and only Angel di Maria leaves the club.

The present scenario

Di Maria has admitted that he wants to stay at United, and keen to make a strong impression next season. Therefore it is highly unlikely that United would sign Gaitan this summer. Valencia based newspaper Superdeporte claims that Gaitan’s agent Jorge Mendes was negotiating a deal with United and it was nearly done, but United’s reluctance to sell Di Maria (his other client) meant the transfer talks cooled off.

Benfica have asked Mendes to sort out a deal for Gaitan at the earliest. Valencia feel they have a chance here to sign the Argentine, and they believe they could negotiate a deal at a much reduced price, now they know Manchester United are certainly not in the race for him.
