Will the Gunners missing out on striker signing cost them?

Arsenal fans will be more than a little concerned at the relative lack of activity from their club during the January transfer window. Whilst the eleventh hour signing of Kim Kallstrom is of course a welcome addition to the squad, it’s not really addressing what many feel to be the outstanding requirement.

With Olivier Giroud remaining the focal point of the Gunners’ forward line, Arsenal have made themselves, and their title challenge, hostages to fortune should the Frenchman suffer an injury. The back up for thier front man is the Dane Niklas Bendner; it’s hardly inspiring and  with the option of Theo Walcott removed from the equation by his season-ending injury, the cupboard looks pretty bare.

Rumours were that Arsene Wenger had made an approach for Fulham’s Dimitar Berbatov, but the Bulgarian grasped the chance of a move to Monaco quicker than you can say “competences soyeux!” That’s ‘silky skills’ to you and me. Wenger had also been chasing options on Saloman Kalou and Miroslav Klose. Whilst the German, currently residing in Rome with Lazio has an excellent pedigree, Chelsea fans would probably have been wishing that Wenger had signed thier former player, who was often the target for barracking by the Blues’ fans. Both options failed to materialise however.

The Gunners are currently having their best season for many a year, and the fans will be nervously watching Giroud, fearing that an injury could ruin all the fine work in the season to date. It would be no major surprise if the  lack of transfer activity came back to haunt Arsene Wenger.
