Who Should be Fifa’s 2007 World Player of The Year?

The 2007 Fifa World Player of the Year will be picked on December 17.

The ‘shortlist’ comprises of 50 players, althought this list can easily be termed as a European competition (none of the 50 nominations play outside Europe) and apart from 4 nominations (1 from Lyon, 3 from Bayern), all the rest are playing in the top 3 European leagues. While these players are certainly some of the best in the world, surely other players from other leagues have had as great an impact on the fortunes of their clubs and countries?

Here’s the list:

Buffon (Juventus, Italy), Cannavaro (Real Madrid, Italy), Cech (Chelsea, Czech Rep), Ronaldo (Man Utd, Portugal), Deco (Barcelona, Portugal), Drogba (Chelsea, Ivory Coast), Essien (Chelsea, Ghana), Eto’o (Barcelona, Cameroon), Gattuso (Milan, Italy), Gerrard (Liverpool, England), Henry (Barcelona, France), Juninho (Lyon, Brazil), Kaka (Milan, Brazil), Klose (Bayern Munich, Germany), Lahm (Bayern Munich, Germany), Lampard (Chelsea, England), Marquez (Barcelona, Mexico), Messi (Barcelona, Argentina), Nesta (Milan, Italy), Pirlo (AC Milan, Italy), Ribéry (Bayern Munich, France), Riquelme (Villarreal, Argentina), Ronaldinho (Barcelona, Brazil), Rooney (Man Utd, England), Terry (Chelsea, England), Tevez (Man Utd, Argentina), Thuram (Barcelona, France), Torres (Liverpool, Spain), Van Nistelrooy (Real Madrid, Holland), Vieira (Internazionale, France).

Kaka, Messi and Ronaldo are expected to be at the top, with Kaka ‘expected’ to take the final plaudits. Who do you think should take the award?

Most notable exclusion? Francesco Totti. If there’s anyone else that you think should be on this list, let us know.
