Kieran Richardson is tipped by ‘some’ to be Manchester United’s rising star of the next season, and as a result (and because we like him here at Soccerlens) I thought it would be appropriate to show you one of United’s best goals of last season, courtesy of one Kieran Richardson.
Taken in context, the goal is inconsequential. 4th goal of a 4-0 drubbing handed out to Charlton Athletic in a match that had Ruud’s departure from the ground (and from Manchester United) hanging over it like a dark cloud. Charlton looked depressed at losing Curbishley as coach, and apart from one decent move (courtesy of Silvestre giving the ball away in our own half) and a couple of close calls in the beginning of the match, Manchester United dominated the fixture from end to end.
The goal itself is a classic example of what self-confidence and outrageous talent can produce given the right stage. A first touch to steal the ball, the second to control it, a third to set him on his run, a fourth to set the shot up and the fifth a rasping shot across the ground that beat the keeper and ended up in the far corner.
Richardson got a yellow card for his post-goal celebrations but it was a clear announcement that he had arrived on the big stage, and if can keep doing that for Manchester United this season, we have a good chance of shedding our ‘have-possession-but-cant-score’ syndrome of recent years.
