The 27-year-old was signed from Malaga in the January transfer window and the Spain international made a bright impression, with his ten Premier League appearances for the club.

Monreal, who represented his nation during the Confederations Cup, has damaged the disc in his back, as confirmed by Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, while speaking to the press during their pre-season tour.

While Arsenal are looking to reinforce their squad with quality players and have been linked with several world class strikers, but it is the defence, which is proving to be a major worry for Wenger as the season draws near.

Skipper Thomas Vermaelen is also set to miss the start of the season, having aggravated his lower back problem while on international duty last month. The Belgian may have cracked a bone in his lower back, while he may also need attention to a thigh muscle injury which is likely to have stemmed from his back.

Wenger fears that due to double injury blows, the left side of his defence might get exposed with Kieran Gibbs the only left sided player in the squad.
