There are only a couple more days left in the summer transfer window, so there’s less spec and more deals right now as the deadline approaches.
Tottenham look set to complete their front line and pave the way for Dimitar Berbatov to get his move to Manchester United, as they’ve agreed what could be a £14m deal for Spartak Moscow striker Roman Pavlyuchenko and may well be set to agree moves for Diego Milito and/or Sergio Garcia, both of Real Zaragoza, as Zaragoza’s president was reportedly in London to iron things out.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Well, that accounts for pieces one, two, and maybe three to the puzzle, but then, as we know…
…Tottenham’s potential deals could have a bearing on more than just the Berbatov deal. Hull have made a £7m bid for Manchester United striker Frazier Campbell. The Tigers have been chasing a permanent deal for Campbell all summer after he helped them earn Premier League promotion, but after an impressive preseason and depth issues up front for United, the 20-year old hasn’t gone anywhere yet.
Rumor Rating: 3 – As it happens, News of the World says that Campbell could be used as a makeweight in United’s move for Berbatov, so….
Meanwhile, Hull have signed Sunderland defender Paul McShane on a season-long loan. The 22-year old Irish defender won’t be able to play against Sunderland when the clubs meet during his spell.
Rumor Rating: 5 – McShane made regular appearances for Sunderland last season after a 2.5m move from West Brom, but thanks in part to injuries and Sunderland making a lot of moves, McShane moves yet again (Brighton in ’05-06, West Brom in ’06-07, Sunderland last season).
Bristol City are set to complete a £140k deal for Ebbsfleet United striker John Akinde. The 19-year old impressed greatly in a limited stint at Ebbsfleet, and that earned him a move to the Championship.
Rumor Rating: 5 – With a pretty promising striker already in their ranks in Nicky Maynard, Bristol City could very well have a promising future up front if Akinde pans out.
Crystal Palace have signed Ipswich striker Alan Lee for a fee believed to be around £600k. The 30-year old Irishman hadn’t scored for Ipswich thus far this season, but he netted 13 times last season and 17 times the season before.
Rumor Rating: 5 – The signing of Lee was a must for Palace, considering they hadn’t scored in their first three Championship ties before Saturday’s 4-2 loss to Reading.
Nery Castillo’s loan move to Real Betis has fallen through, as Betis were unable to strike a deal with Shakhtar Donetsk, due to the club’s unwillingness to include an option to buy.
Rumor Rating: 1 – Unfortunate for Castillo, considering that he might not have much use at City, and Shakhtar, where he’d much rather not be, don’t exactly want to sell him despite not really seeming to want him all that much.
Palermo have sold striker Tulio de Melo to Lille for €4m, and just as quickly, they’ve replaced him with Georgian striker Levan Mchedlidze.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Just as quickly as de Melo left France, he’s going back, without having even played a single competitive match for Palermo, as he wasn’t happy about being guaranteed a place in Palermo’s starting XI.
Monaco are set to sign South Korean striker Park Chu-Young. The 23-year old has nine goals in 27 appearances for his country.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Park looks to be pretty good when it comes to scoring goals, so he could prove to be a good signing for Monaco.
