Well, we’re into the last week of the summer transfer window, so there’s going to be a mad dash to the finish for several sides looking to make some big signings before the window closes.
Some people are going to get their wishes fulfilled, while some are going to end up out in the cold. Who’s getting set to pack their bags today, and who’s still waiting for the magic words? Read on to find out.
This is hilarious, well, unless you’re Robinho. As I mentioned the other day, Real Madrid have said that they’re just fine with letting the Brazilian go to Chelsea, and sure, they are. But, leaving comes at a price – €45m.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Not like Chelsea can’t cover that, but every dream has its price, eh?
Real are trying to work a €2.7m deal with River Plate over starlet Mateo Musacchio.
Rumor Rating: 5 – The 17-year old defender is one of Argentina’s top young talents, and while River have brought him along gradually, he’s already earned three caps for Argentina’s U-20 team.
Valencia could be set to offload several players this week. Midfielder Ever Banega could complete a move to Atletico Madrid this week, and striker Nikola Zigic is reportedly set for talks with Everton and Galatasaray. Another player who could see the exit door is Dutch midfielder Hedwiges Maduro. Like Banega, the 23-year old came to Valencia in January as part of Ronald Koeman’s ‘revolution,’ but he isn’t a part of new manager Unai Emery’s plans.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Maduro has drawn interest from Racing Santadner, Deportivo, and Real Betis, so he shouldn’t have an issue finding a new club before the window closes.
Everton and Portsmouth are reportedly interested in Atletico Madrid midfielder Thiago Motta, who is surplus to requirements at his current club.
Rumor Rating: 3 – The former Barcelona product didn’t make a major impact in his first season at Atletico, but his progress and success has been blighted by recurring injury issues. However, he won’t cost much, and he could be a low-risk, high-reward guy if he’s healthy.
Everton are also being linked with a £1.8m move for former Bristol City target Emad Moteab, as they look to make a few signings before the window closes. The Egyptian striker had a move to Bristol City all wrapped up before he decided to go against his new club’s wishes and play for his club in a derby match (one of the biggest in the world, but bad Emad nonetheless), which saw the move collapse.
Rumor Rating: 3 – While Moteab would no doubt jump at the chance to move to Everton, as it happens, he’s already signed a loan deal to play for Saudi side Al-Ittihad.
West Ham have accepted a bid from Sunderland for defender Anton Ferdinand.
Rumor Rating: 5 – The Hammers need to make a move for at least a defender or two, and they’ve been linked with Marseille’s Gael Givet recently, so this move could help speed up a deal for Givet.
Rennes could be set to sign Arsenal defender Johan Djourou on loan with a view to a permanent deal.
Rumor Rating: 5 – The Swiss international was a regular presence in Arsenal’s squad in the 2006/07 season, but spent the first half of last season on loan at Birmingham and made only a couple of appearances for Arsenal when he returned from his loan spell, and things don’t look much brighter for him at the Emirates this season.
At the same time, Rennes are trying to hold on to player after player. They kept PSG’s hands off of striker Jimmy Briand, and thus far they’ve stood firm on Everton target Stephane M’Bia. Now, they’re trying to hold on to 17-year old starlet Jeremy Halan, who’s a target for Manchester United.
Rumor Rating: 3 – Halan has already signed a trainee contract with Rennes, and with that in mind, they’re not intent on letting him go, even though he’s boycotting training sessions. But, the only one it’s hurting right now is him, as he’s been banned from France’s U-17 team for the time being.
After an extremely impressive performance in helping lead Argentina to the gold at the Olympics, Benfica left winger Angel Di Maria is definitely a hot property, and has been linked with the likes of Real Madrid and other top European clubs. But, if one of them wants the 20-year old, they’ll have to meet his €30m release clause.
Rumor Rating: 3 – You’d like to think that his stock can only go up from here, and that he’ll parlay his terrific performance in Beijing into helping his club make a run at toppling Porto and going deep in the UEFA Cup. If that ends up being the case, he’s going to have a lot of clubs beating down Benfica’s door come next summer.
Well, that’s the end of another day in transfer news and rumors. Hopefully there’ll be plenty to report on tomorrow, but until then, chime in with your thoughts on today’s tidbits, chip in with ones that you’ve read and heard, and make sure you check out the updated summer transfer lists to keep up-to-date on all of the latest confirmed signings.
