There’s not a great deal of earth-shattering news to report on today, since it’s Sunday and all, but hey, to spice things up on a rest day, we do have a never-ending transfer saga to update you on.

See, I knew the whole Gareth Barry saga wasn’t over, despite Aston Villa’s insistence that Liverpool had missed their chance to sign him. Apparently, it’s all thanks to Barry himself, who, along with his agent, went to talk with Martin O’Neill to try to re-open the door to a move.

Rumor Rating: 5 – It looks the meeting has made O’Neill put up the white flag and admit that Barry’s going to go soon enough, so now it’s just up to Liverpool to grant the man his wish.

Unfortunately for the likes of Hull City, promising young striker Fraizer Campbell is set to stay at Manchester United this season. The 20-year old has torn it up on loan spells at Royal Antwerp and Hull in the last two seasons, and Hull wanted him permanently after he helped them earn promotion, but that won’t be happening.

Rumor Rating: 1 – With the pecking order pretty short behind Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez, the chances are excellent for Campbell to get several chances to shine this coming season.

Reading defender Nicky Shorey should get a move back to the Premier League very shortly, according to manager Steve Coppell, who says a bid has been made for the 27-year old, and if the club keeps trying, they’ll get their man before long.

Rumor Rating: 5 – West Ham made a futile bid for Shorey last year, and they could be one of several sides looking to sign him this time around, along with Portsmouth, Aston Villa, and potentially Newcastle.

Speaking of West Ham, they’re set to sign Shahktar Donetsk goalkeeper Jan Lastuvka on a season-long loan. The 26-year old Czech keeper was on loan at German side VfL Bochum last season, and in the 2006/07 season, he was on loan at Fulham.

Rumor Rating: 5 – He’s not a serious threat to take the #1 jersey from Robert Green, but that could very well change if Green struggles early on in the season.

West Brom and Bolton could be set to agree to a swap deal for defender Abdoulaye Meite. West Brom had a bid for Meite turned down a few days ago, but it looks like the two sides could agree to a deal that could see either Paul Robinson or Jonathan Greening move to the Reebok.

Rumor Rating: 5 – Robinson has been heavily linked with an exit, but it appears that the one likeliest to be part of the swap is former Manchester United and Middlesbrough man Greening, who could provide a spark for Bolton in midfield.

Stoke City’s chances of signing Jamaican international Rudolph Austin appear to be done for now after the 23-year old midfielder was denied a work permit.

Rumor Rating: 3 – Austin spent the preseason training with Stoke, and it looked like the transfer wasn’t going to have the hiccups that it did, but even though this news is definitely a big blow, the Potters likely won’t give up on trying to get him.

After missing out on Nancy’s Sebastien Puygrenier, St. Etienne have signed Monaco defender Sylvain Monsoreau for 2.25m.

Rumor Rating: 5 – The 27-year old Monsoreau spent most of his career at Sochaux before moving to Lyon for the 2005/06 season, after which he moved to Monaco.

Sochaux striker Mevlut Erding says that Galatasaray and PSV are interested in his services. The 21-year old Turkish international (four caps) was Sochaux’s top scorer last season.

Rumor Rating: 4 – Galatasaray sure want to stockpile as much of Turkey’s top young talents as possible, and Erding (or Erdinc) is one of them.

PSG have ended their interest in Rennes striker Jimmy Briand after several attempts to try to sign the 23-year old (whose birthday was yesterday).

Rumor Rating: 1 – With their pursuit of Briand finished, Fenerbahce’s Mateja Kezman could be an experienced (and available for a reasonable price) fallback option.

Well, that’s it for the day in transfer news and rumors. There’ll be a lot more to talk about on Monday, but until then, chime in with your thoughts on today’s rumors, chip in ones that you’ve read and heard, and see you on the flip side, folks.
