Both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are having problems with their goalkeepers. With Gunners custodian Jens Lehmann reported to be out of favor at the Emirates and is supposedly on the lookout for another club (preferably one in the Bundesliga), Tottenham are trying to find someone to replace the England international Paul Robinson whose howlers and sudden lack of confidence is not helping the claw out of the bottom half of the table.

The north London rivals both are on the lookout for a new goalkeeper and it seems that both of them have the same target.

Like two guys fighting over one girl or, to be put it less romantically, like two dogs fighting over one bone, Arsenal and Tottenham could go neck to neck over Glasgow Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc, who has said that he is expecting to leave Parkhead for good at the end of the season. Boruc is a Poland international and the number one for his nation. He has also been one of the best Celtic players since joining them from Polish club Legia Warszawa initially on a one-year loan deal.

Boruc has played 29 times for Poland and was the first choice custodian for the 2006 Germany World Cup. Boruc saved an 89th minute Louis Saha penalty last season in the UEFA Champions League to carry Celtic to the knockout stages of the competition. He was adjudged as the December 2006 Player of the Year in the Scottish Premier League and that is a great thing to happen to a goalkeeper. As if such accolades weren’t enough. Artur Boruc was also nominated for the Scottish Professional Footballers’ Association’s player of the year award for 2007.

That the Celtic custodian is ready to leave Parkhead for a greener patch was made clear in an interview to The Herald. There he said:

I have decided I am going to leave Celtic in the summer. Celtic want more than £10million for me but I think it is too much. There is much to look forward to with the Champions League in spring and then the European Championship in the summer, but many things can change and I have to see what is best for me.

Boruc is 6’4” and is arguably the best goalkeeper in Scottish football at the moment. Him stating that is heart no longer lies in Celtic has sent several clubs reeling into gathering the $20 million that Celtic have demanded. Arsenal and Tottenham are in the running for the moment but by the time the summer knocks on our doors, a few other clubs could just barge in.

So what do you think? Would Artur Boruc be a great signing for either club? And which club needs him more: Arsenal or Tottenham? More importantly, which club would Boruc prefer to go? Certainly Arsenal, given that they would be at least playing in the Champions League next season, perhaps even as the champions of England.
