Sunderland have officially confirmed Dwight Yorke’s signing – more players expected tonight. Why must everyone leave this sort of stuff till the last minute?

From the Sunderland club website:

Sunderland official statement

Sunderland boss Roy Keane has signed his former Manchester United team-mate Dwight Yorke.

The experienced striker, who led Trinidad and Tobago to this summer’s World Cup in Germany, has joined the Black Cats from Sydney FC in Australia in a £200,000 deal.

Yorke, 34, has penned a two-year contract at the Stadium of Light, becoming Keane’s first signing.

The frontman has scored 189 goals in his career with five clubs, also netted 15 goals in 57 games for Trinidad and Tobago.

Yorke and Sunderland manager Keane were members of the United team that won the treble in 1999 before he left for Blackburn.

He also had a spell with Birmingham before captaining Sydney to the inaugural A-League title this year.

Yorke began his career with Aston Villa, netting 97 goals for the Villans before Sir Alex Ferguson paid a then Britsh record £12.6m for his services in August 1998.

Soccerlens Reaction

For those of you wondering why I’m covering Sunderland news and not that of Middlesbrough (who have signed Woodgate and Euell, with Huth on the way) or Tottenham (did it yesterday) or anything else, it’s because Sunderland is not Sunderland anymore, it’s Roy Keane.

Take that as you will…
