Sunderland after Manchester United, Chelsea and Blackburn players

At the start of the season Sunderland were predicted by many football analysts to drop to the Championship and although the Black cats did do themselves good in the first few weeks of the Premiership campaign to piss humiliation on those predictions, now that we stand near the busy Christmas period, it does appear that those predictions could easily come true. Sunderland are currently third from bottom with just 13 points from 16 matches.

No reason to doubt that manager Roy Keane is preparing a list of players that he would like to sign this January to save the rot and sustain their Premiership status for at least another season. So far he has three decent players on his shopping list and the former Manchester United great is certain that those are the players who can help his team survive in top-flight English football.

On top of the list is the 25-year old Chelsea midfielder Steve Sidwell. Sidwell was signed by Chelsea for free from Reading in the summer and although he hasn’t been a regular starter for Chelsea, Sidwell has been active in most of the games as a substitute and Chelsea manager Avram Grant has said that he is quite happy with the player’s performance so far this season. But Keane is said to be a huge admirer of the player and would slpash out as much as £5 million to bring him to Sunderland. But whether money is enough to get the player is another thing.

Jason Roberts has publicly stated his desire to leave Blackburn after not getting enough number of games under his belt for Blackburn Rovers so far this season. That has sent Roy Keane into a ponder whether to bid for the Blackburn striker and in all likelihood he will do so. The 29-year old would cost around £2 million and would come to the Stadium of Light without a second invitation since he would almost certainly be guaranteed of first team action that he has been so desperately seeking at Blackburn all this season.

Another player chased by Sunderland is the Manchester United defender Wes Brown who has just refused a new four-year contract with the Premiership giants. Brown is 28 years old and his contract with Manchester United ends at the end of the season but Sir Alex Ferguson might want to sell him now that he would get the transfer money. It’s still not clear whether Brown would like to move to Sunderland since that would several steps down the pecking order for the England international and established Manchester United player but the presence of Roy Keane might just convince him.

Can Keano bring Sidwell, Brown and Roberts to the Stadium of Light?
