Carlos Queiroz is not the most popular man in Manchester and he has made no headway recently in garnering any sympathy from the Manchester United fans. He is making the news not for his erratic team tactics advice to Sir Alex Ferguson (as he has been severely alleged to by some Manchester United fans) but for his unwittingly hampering the club’s chances of snapping up another talented and highly rated overseas player.

Queiroz’s Sporting Lisbon connections are well known but now that good relationship is in some danger of breaking down. In the past few seasons, Lisbon have become richer by several million pounds with the sell out of Cristiano Ronaldo and Anderson to Manchester United and have been looking forward to another big money transfer deal with the club. But Queiroz’s big mouth appears to have dampened the mood somewhat.

The Portuguese has been alleged by Sporting of going public with the talks between the two clubs over the 21-year old defensive midfielder Miguel Veloso. Veloso is highly rated in the Portuguese league and although Sir Alex has enough players in that defensive midfield position, he is interested in enhancing his Man United squad by adding young blood and that is what he is aspiring to do with the import of Veloso.

But the petty spat between Sporting chairman Filipe Soares Franco and the Man United assistant manger Carlos Queiroz is threatening to boil over. So much so that the Portuguese club has taken pains to declare that their former manager is not as important to the club as Man United are and that the good relationship that has been fostered between Man United and them wouldn’t be hampered.

This is what the official club statement about the issue states:

We are the major Portuguese sporting strength and Carlos Queiroz is now persona non grata at Sporting. People have the right to express themselves but he did [it] too much and attacked the chairman Filipe Soares Franco. The club do not want to waste time on this person. [However] this decision will not affect the good relations between Sporting and Manchester United.

Quieroz, in his defense, had this to say:

“The Sporting president accused me of trying to approach a player [Miguel Veloso] illegally and having a low moral and ethical code. These are grave accusations but, nevertheless, despite the personal slurs, this is something to be resolved between the clubs.

His declarations must be clarified and investigated as it’s the first time that a president of another club visits Manchester and publicly accuses a member of the club hierarchy of trying to illegally approach a player. I’m deeply disappointed as this is a position that’s based on unjust conclusions taken from facts that are seen as different by both sides.

I’m sad about all this as when I observe players it doesn’t mean that it’s to snatch them away, although, as all clubs, we do have the right to keep tabs on prospective signings.”

So what do you think about the entire issue? Should Queiroz learn how to keep his mouth shut and just stick to his job? Or is it another example of much ado about nothing?
