As a number of transfer sagas run on into the last week of the January window, there appears to be major progression in North London.

For the entire month Premier League leaders Arsenal have been linked with a move for Schalke wonderkid Julian Draxler, who continues to sparkle in Gelsenkirchen.

With the ever-increasing number of superstar German players at Arsene Wenger’s disposal, the attacking midfielder is reportedly seen as the final piece in the jigsaw in the Gunners’ quest for silverware.

It has been reported that Draxler has a hefty release clause in his contract with the Bundesliga outfit, which would mean that the Emirates Stadium outfit would need to pay almost as much for the 20-year-old as was shelled out for Mesut Ozil in the summer.

Despite Wenger played down reports that Arsenal were eager to bring Draxler to North London on Friday, a reputable source in Germany has revealed that the Gunners have reached an agreement with Schalke over a potential transfer.

Jan Aage Fjortoft, who used to play for Swindon Town, is a retired Norway international and now a respected journalist covering the Bundesliga.

The Scandinavian has stated on Twitter that the clubs have agreed a fee for the Germany international to move to England, and that personal terms will now be negotiated.

Fjortoft was the man that first shed light on Ozil’s transfer from Real Madrid to the Gunners in the summer, and as much be seen as someone with contacts in the right places.

After the Norwegian’s tweet, the major media outlets in Britain have caught wind of the information, with pretty much every newspaper reporting the news that Draxler could well be Premier League bound.

The young star’s addition to Wenger’s squad is still by no means guaranteed, but this must be seen as a major step towards a new superstar name in the Arsenal title push.

With Theo Walcott on the treatment table for the rest of the season, Draxler’s addition could well be the shot in the arm needed to see Arsenal over the finish line this term.
