Chelsea will face German outfit Schalke 04 in the Champions League on Wednesday at Stamford Bridge, where a victory would almost secure their chances of qualifying to the next phase of the competition.

Mourinho

Jose Mourinho was left frustrated and angry with the performance of his side against Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Saturday. The Blues suffered a 2-0 defeat but it was not the defeat, but the manner of the defeat that left the Portuguese fuming.

The Portuguese claimed that he would make few changes for the match against Schalke. In the defence, John Terry and Gary Cahill would start while David Luiz would probably miss out. Mourinho is also unhappy with the performance of Ashley Cole, which means Ryan Bertrand could start on the left flank. Branislav Ivanovic could be dropped and in place Spaniard Cesar Azpilicueta might get a nod.

In the midfield, Frank Lampard could be dropped to the bench, which means Mourinho could start with Ramires and John Obi Mikel.

Belgian press speculated that out-of-form Eden Hazard might be axed while Juan Mata’s position is also under threat. In such a scenario, Willian and Andre Schurrle could start on the flanks.

Fernando Torres is out injured and therefore Mourinho would deploy either of Samuel Eto’o or Demba Ba for this tie.
