Nicolas Otamendi would be a great signing for Manchester United

Argentine newspaper Ole claims Manchester United have reached a preliminary agreement with Argentina defender Nicolas Otamendi, although no final agreement has been reached with Valencia.

United were looking to sign a defender in the summer and were linked with a move for Otamendi in recent months. Ole claims that no final agreement have been reached between the two clubs.

Otamendia has enjoyed a great season for Valencia, but it seems, he is all set to join a new club, which is Manchester United, after the Copa America.

The report says Otamendia has also agreed to play for United. He has signed a pre-agreement with the club, although both the club need to agree to the transfer fee.

It comes as a surprise for us. For the past one month, we haven’t seen any such reports either in Argentina or in the Valencia press. Rather, the Valencia based newspapers were pretty confident that Otamendi would continue with Los Che next season.

La Liga expert Balague claimed Valencia would only sell their prized asset for 50m. Does that mean United are ready to pay that amount especially after knowing they have no hope in signing Mats Hummels from Borussia Dortmund?

The 27-year-old would be a great addition for the club. He has scored five league goals this season for Los Che. He is a natural leader at the back and is just approaching the peak of his career. He could be the next Nemanja Vidic for United.

Otamendi has a strong physical presence, good in tackling and interceptions and strong in clearing the ball in the penalty box area – in a nutshell, he is a solid and defender. United probably do not need a ball playing defender at the moment, rather, they should be aiming at a strong physically imposing defender who can lead the team from the back. Otamendia fits all the bill.
