After a blistering season at Liverpool, Luis Suarez was considered one of the hottest stars to watch in the impending World Cup finals, until injury struck right at the end of the season and put him in major doubt of making the finals. However, recent news from the Uruguayan national team doctor has hopes raised of him being available to play after all.

By no means have any promises or assurances been attainable out of Montevideo, but this is much more promising news than the original fears.

Uruguay begin their finals campaign on June 14th against Costa Rica, a game they may possibly rest him for if things are still touch-and-go, as it will be seen as a more winnable game without him than England or Italy, as well as buying them 5 more days of recovery time for the striker. Obviously, Uruguay manager Óscar Tabárez would ideally have Suarez available in the game that is most likely to end in victory, but right now it is just going to be great news for the South Americans if he is available at all.

Alberto Pan, Uruguayan team doctor, gave the glimmers of hope with his comments in a press conference…

“We can happily say that Luis’ participation in the World Cup is not ruled out.”
“It is very risky to give exact dates. We cannot have absolute certainty or clear numbers but the post-operative period has been very good.
“Luis is very positive. I never heard a negative expression and he says it is better every day. Today he is painless and is working on fitness.”

Pan was very cautious about over-inflating hope but his conference was much more positive than previously thought.

Suarez scored 31 goals in 33 Premier League appearances last season, a phenomenal return, especially considering he also contributed 12 assists and the striker is widely respected as one of the best players in the world right now. A World Cup finals without him would be a shame, although England, Italy and Costa Rica’s defense and fans would no doubt prefer not to face him!
