According to an interview Obafemi Martins gave BBC Sport today, Newcastle United have almost finalised a 10.9 mil deal with Inter Milan for him.

So far both clubs have refused to comment, and given how ‘almost done’ deals tend to fall through at the last minute, you had best not get too excited if you are a Newcastle United fan.

Martins Quotes

I’m close to moving to Newcastle despite all the initial setbacks.

Playing in the Premiership has been a long-term ambition and I am extremely delighted with the prospect of concluding that in the next couple of days.”

The question is, will Martins solve Newcastle’s problems? For all the promise Luque has shown, Roeder will have only two regular strikers AFTER Martins arrives (the other one being Ameobi). Martins (plus a defender) will help Newcastle challenge effectively for 5th and 6th place, but they need to dig in for the long haul and pray that when Owen comes back he’s good enough to play again.
