We have an update on Martin Montoya Liverpool transfer saga. Barcelona are ready to sell defender Martin Montoya, who is a reported target of Liverpool, in January. The Catalan giants would allow him move to any foreign club, so that he can get regular games, should a good offer come in their way in winter.

Spanish newspaper Sport has published an article on Montoya today and explains his present situation in details. The defender, who was chased by Liverpool and other top European clubs in the summer, signed a five-year long term contract in summer, as a result his release clause has bumped to €20m.

There was a clear indication that Montoya would become the long term replacement of Dani Alves, the Brazilian right-rack, at Barcelona, but following the appointment of new coach Luis Enrique, he has been badly overlooked. He has dropped down the pecking orders behind Douglas, and is now the now the third choice defender at the Catalan club.

Sport says that his situation is difficult to understand, let alone explain it, therefore Barcelona have given him a green signal to join any foreign club in January.

And there are no shortage of admirers in Europe for him – the likes of Napoli, Bayer Leverkusen and Inter Milan have had registered their interest – though it is Liverpool who have shown great desire to bring him to Anfield.

The La Liga giants will access all possible offers and wants to apply buy-back clause as well in his contract, in case he moves permanently.

Now, Liverpool have already signed Javier Manquillo in summer, albeit on loan, but the continuous drop in form of Glen Johnson and injury to Jon Flanagan is a concern for the Reds manager which could force Rodgers to sign a solid right-back in January.
