Now that Michael Carrick is safely tucked away into the same locker of hope as Rossi, Richardson, Rooney, and Ronaldo, Alex Ferguson can now turn his attention towards finding the 6th member of his new-look ‘future’ Manchester United squad.
Unfortunately, all signs point to a temporary, rather than a long-term, signing. The two names mentioned in the media (Marcos Senna and Patrick Vieira) are both a shade over 30 and would not classify as ‘long-term’ investments. They have the talent and skills that United needs but lack the pace we will need in the Premiership.
And to make matters worse, with a 15 mil midfielder in the middle of the park, Manchester United cannot afford to put him on the bench. And if Carrick is a sure starter, United will probably return to their 4-4-1-1 of old with Rooney leading the line and Saha/Rossi/Scholes supporting him, and Carrick will be in the midfield with either Scholes or the new recruit.
So who will this new buy be? The media has all but given up on the Vieira-United rumours, but my bet is that in this week we will know for sure about both players (Senna and Vieira), and where they are going. Vieira has stated that:
“Now I’m not sure where I’m playing next season, I’m still looking for a new club. There might be some sort of conclusion in the next 48 hours and it’s a very important decision for me. I will not be playing for Juventus since they are going to Serie B.”
He’s also mentioned that “anything is possible in football” – the man is not ruling out a move to either club, and it seems as if Juve are going to sell to the highest bidder (Inter or Manchester United).
So who do you think will United sign from these two?
And while we’re at it, why isn’t Ferguson going after Owen Hargreaves?
