Manchester United have signed Dimitar Berbatov from Tottenham Hotspur for £30.75m. Frazier Campbell is headed the other way in a 1-year loan deal (smart bit of business from United, that).

The transfer was always expected to go down to the wire but Manchester City’s weekend takeover threw it in a spin with City’s new owners jumping in with a bid for Berbatov which was accepted by Tottenham.

Berbatov, however, wasn’t swayed by the wads of cash being waved under his nose and stuck to his guns and while City turned to Spain (where Robinho had no qualms about jumping outside the Champions League for a season), United sweetened the deal with young striker Frazier Campbell and the rest is history. Very expensive history and a decent bit of business by Tottenham when you look at the 20m profit and 46 goals in 2 years.

Now we can put this transfer business behind us and watch England stumble around in Barcelona and Zagreb for a couple of weeks. Football should be so simple….

Alex Ferguson:

“This is a key signing. Dimitar is one of the best and most exciting strikers in world football. His style and ability will give the team a different dimension and I’m sure he will be a popular player with the fans.”

Dimitar Berbatov:

“Joining Manchester United is a dream come true for me. I look forward to playing my part in helping this club win more honours in the years to come.”
