Manchester United’s interest in Benfica’s winger Nico Gaitan is nothing new. The Red Devils have had registered their interest quite a number of times and there are numerous reports in Portugal press that suggest the interest hasn’t died down yet.

It was back in April 2012 Jason Burt of The Daily Telegraph published the story that says Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Gaitan, while Fabio and Macheda could be included in the deal as a part exchange.

In the summer, it was again revealed that United are set to reignite their interest in the 25-year-old, despite the fact the Argentine winger had expressed his desire to continue at the Portuguese club.

On November, we published a story, where Portugal newspapers A Bola and O Jogo both claimed that Manchester United are aiming to land Benfica trio, and of them is Gaitan.

Nico Gaitan

According to reports from O Jogo today, Benfica president has revealed that any potential suitor would have to pay €20m for Gaitan, who has a contract till 2016. Manchester United had targeted Real Madrid’s Angel di Maria, but his price tag is proving be the main obstacle, hence the Red Devils have shifted their attention to Gaitan, claims the report.

While a player of Gaitan’s caliber would enrich United’s squad no doubt, but do they need him now? Central midfield is the main area where Moyes needs to invest. Further, any investment on the wings could hamper the development of young guns like Januzaj and Zaha. He represents one of those shiny toys in the market which United can really do without at the moment.
