5 World-Class Players United Have Failed To Sign

Manchester United and Arsenal have been cleared to sign Borussia Dortmund’s star duo Ilkay Gundogan and Mats Hummels in the summer transfer window.

The Express claims the German internationals are a transfer targets for both the Premier League clubs as they look to bolster their squad in the summer transfer window.

The Bundesliga outfit’s chief executive Hans Joachim Watzke has admitted Dortmund will allow two of their star players leave, hinting that Gundogan and Hummels could be set for an exit from the Signal Iduna Park.

“There will be no major overhaul. Last year one player left [Robert Lewandowski who joined Bayern Munich], this year it is probably two,” Watzke told Reuters.

“Everything else is still open. So yes, there will be change but not a complete overhaul of the team.  As for any of the other cases, I will not talk about names.”

Gundogan has one year left on his contract and has already refused to commit his future to the German club. Watzke claims the midfield star will leave Dortmund, if the potential suitors could meet their asking price.

“We have already finished talking with the player and as he did not want to extend his relationship with us, we have thought that he could leave this summer. Although it will depend on the offers that reach the club,” Dortmund chief said.

United could beat Arsenal in signing both Gundogan and Hummels. The Gunners manager Arsene Wenger admitted that Louis van Gaal’s side are already ahead in signing the Emirates club’s transfer targets.

Both United and Arsenal will be looking to strengthen their midfield and defence in order to challenge Chelsea for the league title. The arrival of Gundogan and Hummels to either of the sides could help them bolster their squad for the next season.
