How can Liverpool improve this summer?

As part of our 2006/2007 Premiership season-end review, here’s a look at how Liverpool’s season went. Read up, then offer your own advice on how Liverpool can improve this summer.

  1. Pre-season expectations: There were very high expectations from Liverpool this season – they were expected to challenge for the Premiership title and at least reach the quarters of the Champions League.
  2. Season evaluation: Despite their Champions League exploits, Liverpool regressed this season. Last year they were much closer to the top 2 and they failed to perform in the Premiership as expected (3rd because of goal difference, 21 points behind United). Domestic cups were a travesty as well, which only leaves the Champions League as a performance of any note.
  3. The Big Negative: Inconsistency – Rafa Benitez is one of the best managers to have for knock-out games (2 CL finals in 3 years with Liverpool) not as good when consistency in the league is required. And yes, it’s down to the manager, not the players.
  4. The Big Positive: The takeover – Liverpool will now have funds to improve the squad, although to be honest you can’t just buy the league (otherwise Ranieri would have won it in Abramovich’s first season).
  5. Summer Priority: Clear out the dead wood and bring in 2-3 quality attacking players.

Liverpool are a club with high expectations, and they should be doing better in the Premiership / domestic cups than they have so far. The responsibility for this falls on the manager, and it’s up to him to show people next season that he can crack the Premiership.

Now it’s your turn: How do you think Liverpool can improve this summer?
