Liverpool have lodged a €25m (£21.8m) bid for the Atlético Madrid striker Diego Costa, reports The Guardian.

Diego Costa

The 24-year-old is one of the most highly talented players in the Spanish League and had a very good last season, where he scored 20 goals in all competitions, so much so that, the Atletico fans voted him as their player of the year in their unique fan forum.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has stressed the need of strengthening the first eleven before the transfer deadline, amid the ongoing uncertainty over the future of Luiz Suarez and didn’t hesitate to make a big money move for the twice-capped Brazilian. It is understood the Reds have met the release clause inserted in the player’s contract and are hoping to conclude the deal swiftly.

Despite the great potential the player possesses, Costa is known for his poor disciplinary record and is seen as a controversial figure in Spain. It was expected that he would play a big role this season at the Vicente Calderon following the departure of Radamel Falcao to Monaco, but after the summer arrival of David Villa from Barcelona, the RojiBlancos could now allow Costa to leave too.

Liverpool meanwhile are steadfast in their decision to keep hold of Suarez and have already rejected two bids from Arsenal. Further, Rodgers has insisted that the dispute in clause has been solved internally as the Uruguayan now understands that the clause doesn’t allow the club to sell him.

Costa is primarily a striker, who can also play behind the striker role as an attacking central midfielder or out wide, from where he likes to drift inside. He is an extremely hard working player but possess football intellect to create spaces for himself & get into goal scoring positions.

Costa would definitely bolster Liverpool’s attacking options in the coming season. He will become the fifth major signing of the season, following the arrivals of Iago Aspas, Kolo Toure, Luis Alberto and Simon Mignolet.
