Italian Match-Fixing Scandal Verdict

The verdit results from Italy are in.

Juventus have been stripped of their last two titles, relegated to Serie B and docked an incredible 30 points. This makes it virtually certain that they will spend at least two seasons in Serie B. Juve will attempt to get the points deduction reduced through appeals, but they only have a couple of days to do that in.

Lazio and Fiorentina have also been relegated to Serie B and lose their places in Europe. Fiorentina are hit with a 12 point ban while Lazio take 7-point hit. Both are also expected to appeal the verdict but for them it will be easier to gain promotion next term.

AC Milan have NOT been relegated but are out of Europe and will suffer a 15-point penalty – this virtually eliminates their chance fo winning the title and puts their shot at European football in serious jeopardy.

As Italy have to give in the final list of names of the clubs playing in Europe next season to UEFA by July 25, a final verdict must be delivered by the 24th (and all appeals must be filed and ruled upon by then).

Manchester United are interested in Vieira, Buffon to Arsenal and Cannavaro looks set to go to Real Madrid (although some trashy tabloid is saying that Chelsea might bid for him – Abramovich again?). Zambrotta, Thuram, Emerson, Trezeguet and Ibrahimovic will be up for grabs, and it’s anyone’s guess where they will go (Zambrotta to Madrid?).
