Defender Supreme Paolo Maldini has seen it all and done it all in club football. He has been with AC Milan since forever (for the pedants, let us reframe that since 1985) and has often been their inspiration and drive. But for how many more years can one of the genuinely best defenders of all time continue? When will he hang up his golden boots?

Not now, if you are to believe the player himself. A string of knee injuries might have been soaring press suggestions that the end is well nigh for a player who has been as successful as anyone in club football but Paolo Maldini has himself dismissed all such rumors that he is considering about retirement from club football after the Club World Cup in Japan.

In Maldini’s own words:

I still have a contract with Milan until June of 2008 and I am prepared to strictly follow it. I am in such good condition and I don’t intend to give up the contract before it expires.

But the doubts linger on. AC Milan might be the reigning European champions and have been the best and most entertaining team last season in the UEFA Champions League but the ageing of the squad has been one crucial factor that is compelling football pundits to declare that a change is required to be wrung at the club. The AC Milan defence is ageing and there has been one or two suggestions that Milan manager Carlo Ancelotti should now come out and ask Silvio Berlusconi for more money to replace his backline.

That is not to decimate Maldini’s worth and even at 39 years still remains one of the best in the world but it would an wise idea that AC Milan do some transfer shopping and steel the defence and the team as a whole.

Should Maldini retire? Do AC Milan need to shore up their team with new signings? Discuss below.
