The Henry-Kirkland incident has been doing the rounds – I first thought it would die down quietly but apparently I underestimated the media’s (and people’s) capacity for tolerating petty arguments about nonsensical issues while they avoid the big ones.
Yes, Henry overreacted and he shouldn’t have; he should have shown more class.
Yes, Kirkland was wasting time since the first half and probably deserved it too.
Yes, Wigan are fighting for their lives.
Luckily, I’m not too fond of the ‘show sympathy to the underdog’ movement, so tough luck for Kirkland and Jewell and Wigan. You do what you have to do, but then you must also be prepared to accept the consequences. If you dive, you get booed. If you push someone, they push you back. Kirkland had been pushing Arsenal’s buttons for some time before that incident took place. Henry was not justified (he should show his class), but Kirkland had it coming to him.
At the end of the day, it’s a small thing and the best thing would be to keep it out of the media’s hands and let Kirkland and Henry deal with it themselves.
There are bigger things to be worried about in the world, even in football.
