It was a fascinating match – Spain playing some fantastic possession football but they were met with the class and strength of the French, and it was never going to be an easy ride. But, towars the end, it was France who showed their class and went through 3-1 while the form team, Spain, crashed out against the first quality side they’d met in four matches.

Five Key Moments

1. Vieira’s hand hits Torres in the face (unknowingly, I must add) as Vieira races away with the ball. This leads to Luis Aragones shouting from the touchline. Vieira tells him to shut up by putting a finger to his lips and mouthing ‘tait toi’ (‘shut up’ in French) as the fourth official told Aragones to go back to his seat.

2. Ribery’s goal – classy all the way through.

3. Gallas kops a shot in the zone and the camera repeated moves away from the injured player as he and the medical staff check the area of impact for damage. Censoring live action? He got hit in the balls for Christ’s sake, let us laugh properly.

4. Zidane’s goal – oh my fkn god 🙂

5. And the biggest moment – the moment that changed the match:

Henry, after a game in which he was repeatedly being caught offside, chose to dive when Puyol got in his way as both men went for the ball – an arm into the chest that would not have been even a foul if Henry hadn’t gone down was a free kick AND a yellow card for Carlos Puyol as Henry did a ‘Rivaldo’ and went down clutching his face. Zidane swung in the free kick, Vieira headed it in and the ball bounced off Ramos into the net (otherwise I imagine Casillas would have got a hand to it).

Zidane, much maligned throughout this tournament, turned it on at the end of stoppage time and delivered the killer blow and proved, that for one more time, he is still one of the best in the business.

Who would have thunk it? Even angels fall…
