The wait is finally over. The Euro Championships are finally set to start, with host nation France kick-off the competition on Friday night against Romania and are among the favourites (back France at 6/1 with Ladbrokes to reach the final) to win the title.

History suggests that no host nations have won the Euro Championships since 1984. Incidentally, France were the last team to have won this competition as a host when they defeated Spain 2-0, some 32 years back. Furthermore, the French won the last time they hosted a major tournament when they won the 1998 World Cup and Didier Deschamp’s side are widely expected to repeat the heroics yet again.

France boast a talented young squad and are loaded with world class players in almost every departments. They look particularly strong in midfield and attacking areas but defence remains a major concern with two key players – Rafael Varane and Mamadou Sakho – are missing through injury and suspension.

The host’s defensive problems mean they are liable to concede (back France to win with a 2-1 scoreline at 8/1 with Ladbrokes) but they’ve such depth and quality on attacking front that they are likely to outscore any opponent.

Romania, on the other hand, are the third favourite to progress to the next round from Group A. They are heading into this match on the back of a 5-1 win over Georgia and Anghel Iordănescu’s side are capable of pulling out jaw-dropping performances when they’re motivated and are in-form.

Betting odds / prediction: Olivier Giroud to score?

The Arsenal striker has been booed and jeered by the home fans lately, but in all probability, he will lead the attacking line for France against Romania on Friday night.

Giroud has scored 24 goals for Arsenal in 2015/16 in all competitions but he also endured a significant period of goal-drought since January when he scored only two goals in 21 games in all competitions.

But he seems to have found his goal scoring touch again, having scored twice in France’s 3-0 win over Scotland last week.

Betting Odds: France – Romania: Over 2.5 goals

The opening game of the Euros usually tends to be low scoring but this year’s game might buck that trend. Les Blues have scored 13 goals in their last four games (France are at 2.5 evens with Ladbrokes), with all those games resulting in over 2.5 goals.
