canFormer Premier League forward Jan Aage Fjortoft has slammed Liverpool for signing Emre Can from Bayer Leverkusen this summer.

The Merseyside club have agreed a deal in principle with the Bundesliga outfit to land the midfielder and the transfer will go through once the documentation is completed. Fjortoft believes the 20-year-old is an “average” midfielder and the Reds manager Brendan Rodgers made a mistake in signing him.

“I don’t think he is a good signing, I think he’s an average player in Germany,” Fjortoft told Sky Sports Radio.

“But Brendan Rodgers has shown before that he’s a much better manager than Jan Aage Fjortoft so we have to trust him in that department. I can’t see that he will improve Liverpool Football Club.”

Can was Liverpool’s second signing of the summer after the Anfield outfit sealed a deal for Rickie Lambert from Southampton earlier this month. The 32-year-old England international supported the Red since his childhood days and had a trial with the Merseyside club, before being released at the age of 15.

Meanwhile, Can is a versatile player, who can feature in multiple roles and his addition could give the former Swansea boss more options during the team selection. He has already featured in the Champions League with Leverkusen and his experience in the European competition could prove vital for the Reds next season.

It is too early to tell whether Can could be an instant hit for Liverpool. However, his ability to play in the central midfield, either attacking or as a defensive midfielder could prove vital for Rodgers and Liverpool over the years.
