Football News Roundup – 13/11/06

A look at the news today:

Shola Ameobi is out for the season – and you can almost hear Newcastle fans groaning at the prospect of a relegation battle. It’s not pretty, but they have put themselves in this mess and for the life of me I can’t understand why they persist in making it worse.

Ruud van Nistelrooy scored 4 (FOUR!) goals for Real Madrid against Osasuna. He has now scored 8 goals in La Liga, which is the exact same number as Didier Drogba in the Premiership this season. Ronaldinho scored a couple as well, although Messi is now out injured for the next 3 months with a broken metatarsal and that will put pressure on Barcelona’s remaining two Champions League group matches.

Thomas Gravesen scored an hat-trick for Celtic – I’m not sure that proves much, apart from the fact that Gravs knows where the back of the net is and that the SPL isn’t a great league to be playing in.

Xabi Alonso has given up on the Premiership title – Reina gave up after the Old Trafford defeat, so you really have to wonder how strong Liverpool are mentally to say that. Manchester United fell 13 points behind Chelsea in October last season but they never gave up. I’m sure Benitez hasn’t given up either, but for the players to talk like this is a problem.
