Goalkeeper Luke McCormick has been jailed for seven years and four months for killing two children in a motorway crash. The former Plymouth Argyle player admitted causing the deaths of Arron Peak, 10, and Ben Peak, eight, and driving with excess alcohol. The brothers died in a collision on the M6 near to Stoke-on-Trent on 7 June.

The 25-year-old had been attending team-mate David Norris’ wedding reception in Bolton, but decided to drive to Coventry after rumours of his fiancee’s alleged infidelity were posted on the internet. McCormick had been seen drinking beer and sambuca shots. He left the reception at 2am but got only two hours sleep before decided to begin his journey.

He told eyewitnesses at the scene: “I am so sorry, I’m sorry. I just fell asleep. I fell asleep, I’m sorry.”

The former England youth international had his contract with Argyle cancelled shortly after the incident took place.
