Defoe prefers Tottenham return over Villa move

Yesterday, I reported that Aston Villa were making a £16m offer for Portsmouth striker Jermain Defoe. Since then, Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill has denied making any such move, and as it happens, the non-interest may be mutual.

Today, the Mail reported that Defoe met with Pompey manager Tony Adams yesterday and stated his preference to move to Tottenham and reunite with Harry Redknapp as opposed to going to Aston Villa.

Portsmouth are said to favor any deal involving Villa, considering the amount of money that they’re willing to pay for Defoe, and a move to Villa would also have great benefits for Defoe. I mean hey, you’d rather be fighting for the Champions League than staving off relegation, right?

But, Redknapp did help offer him a lifeline when his career stalled at Tottenham, and this could be his way of repaying the favor. However, is Redknapp willing to pony up the necessary funds? He recently said that he likely wouldn’t be able to afford him, but if Spurs are making £12m offers for Craig Bellamy, then that’s a good indication that they can afford a sizable bid for Defoe.
