When I previewed yesterday’s matches, I talked about the Group H matches being unimportant, as Spain was the only team capable of going to the quarter finals. That prediction was confirmed, but what I hadn’t counted on was Tunisia and Saudi Arabia turning it up a few notches in the second half – the match ended 2-2 but it was a thrilling end nevertheless.
Spain thrashed Ukraine 4-0, and Germany edged past Poland with a goal in extra time to book themselves a place in the last 16. Spain’s performance will be judged by many to be the best of the tournament so far, but Ukraine were more to blame for the scoreline, even if Spain were excellent in possession and clinical in finishing. Even Torres, known more for his potential and tendency to miss goals than to score them got one in, an excellent team-move that could easily be one of the best goals of the tournament.
And only the 1st round of matches have gone by so far. The second round should see much more of the same. Till now, the predictions seem to be holding, at least for the second round with the exception of Group A, where Poland may not progress at all.
