Prior to the World Cup we discussed Chelsea’s massive transfer activity (when is it not massive?) and counted 6 signings (with a left-back slated to arrive soon).
With so many people coming in however, there are bound to be exits. With the transfer season starting on July 1st, let’s look at the likely exits from Stamford Bridge.
Glenn Johnson – The right-back has already moved to Portsmouth on a year-long loan deal.
Hernan Crespo – Argentina’s progress in the World Cup coupled with the corruption scandals in Italy had dampner on Crespo’s mooted move to Milan, but the move is bound to happen this summer with Crespo having gone public with his desire to return to Italy. Mourinho has been quoted as saying that he does not want to sell Crespo but that he will be willing to let him go. Milan is Crespo’s most likely destination.
Carlton Cole – Last month Carlton Cole was linked to Tottenham for a fee of 2 million pounds, but since then nothing has came out of the deal (and the Spurs have since signed Berbatov). West Ham are also rumoured to be interested. Chelsea want to offload him, for sure, and it looks like West Ham may take him for 1.5 mil.
Damien Duff – He’s falling down in the pecking order (although he’s still above SWP) and his age will count against him. However, along with Robben, Cole and SWP he is one of four wingers, and considering Mourinho’s policy to keep 2 players in every position, Duff may well stay at Stamford Bridge.
Shaun Wright-Phillips – Ditto for SWP, despite the ‘loan’ rumours circulating in England. Chelsea don’t need to sell, and they don’t want to sell. Plus SWP is happy to stick it out.
William Gallas / Didier Drogba / Ricardo Carvalho – Mourinho does not want any of these three players to leave. He’s convinced Drogba to stay, and will talk to both Gallas and Carvalho after the World Cup. The most troublesome one is Gallas, and he will also be the greatest loss to Chelsea if he leaves.
Robert Huth – A 5.5 million deal with Boro is already done and dusted.
Other players going out?
