Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United have all progressed to the Champions League semifinals for the second season in a row which equals the record set in 2000/2001 when three of the previous year’s semifinalists again reached the last four.
In 2000/2001, the previous season’s winners Real Madrid were joined by 1999/2000 runners-up and losing semifinalists Valencia CF and Bayern München.
Before this season, Chelsea were the only English club to have reached successive Champions League semifinals — they achieved this in 2004 and 2005.
The 2003/2004 season is the only season in which none of the previous season’s last four reached the Champions League semifinals.
