Didier Zokora’s statement to News of the World claiming that he was “already a Tottenham player” after “the two clubs reached an agreement” confirmed what we’ve thought all along – Manchester United are getting closer and closer to bring Michael Carrick to Old Trafford.

The 8.5 million pound move for the St Etienne and Ivory Coast midfielder is confirmation that Martin Jol has been looking to bring in replacements for his midfield duo of Edgar Davids and Michael Carrick. While Davids is staying another year, his value is largely confined to the training ground and the dressing room and it will be to Zokora that Jol looks at as a direct replacement for Carrick.

While it was reported that United and Arsenal were after Zokora as well there were two main factors that would have made a move to White Hart Lane a certainty – Tottenham’s links with St Etienne and the chance of regular first-team football with the Spurs. Zokora would never have gotten that sort of chance with Arsenal and United, and it looks like he has made a smart decision. His ‘selection’ of Tottenham may not turn out to be a selection though, as United have always been interested in bigger names and Arsenal had not shown any concrete interest.

The upside for Manchester United (and this is a big one) is that we will be getting our first summer signing soon. Carrick’s 14.2 mil deal is rumoured to have been accepted by the Spurs, who have taken the time to bring in a replacement before selling him on. Carrick’s desire to play at the top level (Champions League plus international football) will also have had a major impact in him declining to sign a new deal with Tottenham.

The actual transfer will happen after England return home, but now United fans can look towards the future with a little more optimism (although we still need another midfielder, and possibly another striker if Nistelrooy leaves.
