Visiting side Glasgow Rangers have been in solid domestic form of late, winning three successive matches in the SPL and the Cup, keeping clean sheets in all three games to boot.
The last time we saw Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side in league action, Rangers romped to a routine 2-0 win against Hibernian, enabling the Gers to keep within touching distance of old rivals Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premier League.
However, Rangers haven’t travelled all that well in this year’s European competition to date. Though the Gers did qualify in second place from Europa League Group A, they did so without winning a single game on the road, drawing twice, and losing once.
As such, it’s little surprise to see that the oddsmakers have inserted Borussia Dortmund as the betting favorites to win the first leg at home at Signal Iduna Park.
Dortmund beat Union Berlin, 3-0, at the weekend after losing against Bayern Leverkusen in their previous Bundesliga encounter.
The Union Berlin result made it four wins in five league games for Marco Rose’s side who remain in second place in the table with 46 points, six behind Bayern Munich who (as usual) top the table.
Worrying for Gers’ fans, Dortmund’s recent form at Singal Iduna Park has also been tremendous. Die Schwarzgelbenhave won five of the last six games played on their home patch, with only reigning Bundesliga champions and UCL hopefuls, Bayern Munich, tarnishing the record.
There is, however, some optimism for Rangers fans:
Firstly, 10 of the last 14 two-legged fixtures in Gers’ Europa League/UEFA Cup history have ended in wins for the Scottish side.
And, secondly, Dortmund will likely have to face Rangers without star-striker Erling Haaland. The Norwegian striker has already amassed 16 goals in 14 games for Die Schwarzgelben but likely misses Thursday’s game with a muscle injury.
