Is Sports Betting Legal in Alaska?

Since the repealing of PASPA (Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act) in 2018, the United States Supreme Court ruled that it was legal for states to pass their own legislature regarding sports gambling, and many states have done just that. But is sports betting legal in Alaska?

Unfortunately, as of March, 2024, the answer is still a resounding “No” – sports betting has not been legalized in Alaska. The only legalized forms of gambling in the state are dog-sledding races, bingo, charitable gambling, and daily fantasy sports. Every other form of wagering is taboo. However, this isn’t for lack of trying…

Governor Mike Dunleavy proposed two bills in 2020. SB 188 and HB 246, otherwise known as The Alaska Lottery Corporation Act, were set to legalize Alaska sports betting and various other forms of gambling within the state. There were high hopes for passing these bills in a state where it’s estimated that approximately 138,000 natives spend $348 million annually on out-of-state sports wagering! However, the arrival of COVID-19 once again put things on the back burner.

Since the end of the pandemic, Representative Wool has reintroduced the concept of legal sports betting in Alaska through HB 385, which again sets out to legalize mobile sports wagering in the state. However, the bill remains within the jurisdiction of the House Labor and Commerce Committee without further progress. Still, it is hoped that 2024 will bring a renewed zest for reviving these efforts.

Online Sportsbooks

Alaska sports betting is illegal, which means online sports betting in Alaska is, too. The state offers no legal or regulated online sportsbooks through which bettors can wager.

But, this doesn’t eliminate the online sports betting Alaska residents can participate in. Bettors have the option of utilizing some of the best offshore sportsbooks available. The catch is that these sites are not located in the United States and are, thus, not governed by federal gambling laws. Still, Alaska has no formal legislature prohibiting residents from using these sites, meaning you just need to be sure that you’re betting on a platform that is licensed and verified, which is where we come in.

Land-Based Betting in Alaska

Just as with online sports betting, the law prohibits in-person Alaska sports betting. As a result, there are no land-based sportsbooks or licensed betting establishments in the state.

Alaska offers only charitable betting, bingo, and instant games as forms of in-person gambling. Poker, slot machines, sports betting, and other table games are prohibited.

Alaska Horse Racing & Off-Track Betting

Alaska sports betting laws prohibit sports wagering, including betting on horse races. As a result, off-track betting is also illegal. There are no horse racing tracks in Alaska, either.

However, the state does allow for wagering on traditional sports, one of which is dog-sled racing, the most famous race being the Iditarod. Those wagering on this race enter their bets via telephone or in person, and the Charitable Gaming Commission manages the whole setup.

Sports Betting Guides by State

Timeline of Alaska Sports Betting Legislation

While Alaska has taken a few steps towards legalizing gambling and sports betting, the race towards doing this since the repealing of PASPA is not one the state has participated in with gusto. As a result, Alaska remains one of the few states where sports betting has not been legalized.

Let’s take a look at the Alaska sports betting legislation timeline:

  • 22 February 2022 – Rep. Wool submits HB 385, proposing the introduction of mobile sports wagering in the state. However, nothing more to report as of March, 2024.
  • 2020 – Governor Mike Dunleavy proposed two bills in support of legalizing multiple forms of gambling in Alaska, but they tabled these due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
  • 14 May 2018 – The state-level autonomy of sportsbook gambling legality, free from federal interference, was established by the Supreme Court’s decision in Murphy v. NCAA.
  • 2018 – The Supreme Court repeals PASPA, and states can pass legislation legalizing sports betting.
  • 2008 – Alaska held a second referendum to legalize gambling, and again, the vote was a “no,” and by a substantial margin.
  • 2006 – Daily Fantasy Sports becomes legal in Alaska because of the wording in the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 that states DFS is a game of skill.
  • 1993 – The Klawock Natives of Alaska began the building of a tribal casino, purchasing land, and beginning construction. However, the government put a spanner in the works by passing new laws prohibiting all casino games in the state. As a result, they did not continue the construction of this casino.
  • 1990 – Alaska held a referendum on legalized wagering. However, it was voted out 2:1.1987 – “Mafia Mike” Von Gnatensky attempts to enter the race to become the new mayor of Anchorage. His campaign centered on bringing revenue to the region by legalizing casinos in Alaska. However, he did not gain a large enough following to warrant running in the general election.

Offshore Online Sports Betting in Alaska

While not legal or illegal in Alaska, offshore sports betting provides residents with the best opportunity to wager on their favorite sports teams despite the legal restrictions in place.

These offshore online sportsbooks are located out of the United States, based in places like Europe and Curacao. As a result of their locale, neither the United States government nor Alaskan gambling laws regulate these sites. Because they do not fall under the rule of state or federal laws, offshore sports betting sites are considered legal. In addition, Alaska has no legislature regarding offshore sports betting sites, which opens the gates for bettors to use them.

These offshore online Alaska sports betting sites face very few restrictions, enabling them to offer exciting bonuses and improved odds. Bettors can access everything from casino games to the sports betting Alaska residents most value. However, even if the idea of an offshore Alaska sports betting site appeals to you, it is best to keep a few things in mind before getting started.

First, some offshore sites are unlicensed. And, although unlicensed sites that utilize cryptocurrencies are relatively safe, we recommend using a licensed offshore sportsbook instead, such as the ones we have vetted and approved on this page. Licensed offshore sportsbooks tend to be more reliable and reputable, especially regarding payouts. In addition, you’re less likely to be scammed or lose your deposit and earnings.

The sites discussed in this guide are some of the best Alaska sportsbooks available. We reviewed them extensively, ensuring reputability, ease of use, and a wide selection of popular sports offerings.

Alaska Daily Fantasy Sports

Daily Fantasy Sports, or DFS, is legal in Alaska and has been since 2006 when the wording in the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 declared DFS as a game of skill.

As a result, Daily Fantasy Sports is not regarded as a form of gambling and is no longer governed by gambling laws. DFS is the only form of legal online wagering that Alaska sports betting residents can access. Bettors can use sites such as FanDuel and DraftKings, legal sites that operate DFS contests, and make it possible for bettors to wager on them for real money.

Alaska Casino Laws

Casino laws are few and far between mainly because most online gambling in Alaska is deemed illegal. The state, known for its icy tundras, offers bettors no land-based gambling establishments, nor does it provide any online casinos.

Online Casinos

In Alaska, online casinos are illegal. Therefore, Alaska residents wanting to play casino games online will need to use an offshore casino. Some of the best options include:

  • BetOnline
  • BetUS
  • Bovada
  • XBet
  • MyBookie

While there are multiple additional offshore sites available, many are unlicensed. As a result, bettors often have very little recourse when payouts are not made, or other issues are encountered.

Land Based Casinos

Alaska has no land-based casinos or sportsbooks. In 1993, the Alaskan Klawock Native tribe began building a tribal casino. However, the casino was never realized. Despite purchasing the land, drawing up plans, and beginning construction, the Alaskan government passed several new laws prohibiting all casino games in the state.

Bettors who want to place in-person bets must travel to nearby states with legal casinos or go on a casino cruise.

Alaska Gambling Tax

Alaska has no land-based or online gambling that requires the implementation of gambling taxes. However, casino cruises operating in Alaskan waters must pay a tax of 33% of the adjusted gross income of gambling revenue earned.

Should Alaska sports betting become legal in the future, bettors can be sure that a gambling tax will be implemented.

Best Alaska Sportsbooks Reviewed

Sports betting Alaska fans have various offshore sportsbooks to choose from. However, not all of these sites are safe or reliable.

We have tested and reviewed many platforms to make it less challenging for you to find the best Alaska sports betting online. So keep reading to discover which ones made it onto our list of five best offshore sports betting Alaska sites.

1. BetOnline – Best Alaska Sportsbook Overall 2024

betonline - alaska betting sites

If you’re looking for Alaska’s top offshore sportsbook, you’ve just found it. BetOnline has an outstanding reputation, and it is easy to see why. The site is simple to navigate, and it offers impressive betting odds for all sports.

Whether you want to wager in-play while live streaming select events, benefit from a host of ongoing promos, including free prop/live bets, or craft multi-leg parlays, SGPs, or teasers, BetOnline provides all.

The platform is also recognized as being highly reliable, earning its reputation from its quick payouts and the wide selection of ways bettors can withdraw their earnings and make deposits, including cards, crypto, and transfers.

Another aspect of BetOnline that has bettors smiling is the exceptional BetOnline promo codes on offer. New players signing up on the site for the first time can enjoy a 50% welcome bonus of up to $1,000 when making their initial deposit. To claim this exciting bonus, bettors need only input the promo code “BET1000.”

Pros:

  • Highly competitive betting odds
  • Easy-to-use interface and slip
  • Accepts live bets with select live-streaming
  • Provides users with timely payouts
  • Offers players impressive bonus codes

Cons:

  • BetOnline does not feature a mobile app

2. Everygame – Huge Range of Parlay & NFL Bonuses

everygame alaska sports betting site

With decades of experience serving the North American market, Everygame has upped its game further in time for the 2024 slate of major league action. Firstly, the live betting suite looks modernized and now offers improved graphical displays of the big in-game moments, the ability to follow multiple matches using multi-screen, and regular odds boosts on select markets. Make no mistake, this is now one of the better live betting sites in Alaska.

On top of that, Everygame has upped its market depth in recent years. Sports fans have always had access to around 20 markets with regular game lines and futures at competitive odds. Still, the volume of futures bets has increased significantly, especially for NFL, NBA, and NHL betting. The same goes for proposition wagers, which are now available (not as many as on sites like BetOnline, granted, but a lot more than last season). Crafting parlays and teasers is also simplified using the revamped betting slip.

For the bonus hunters out there, Everygame generally offers a deposit match welcome offer that players can claim by inputting the correct Everygame promo code shortly after registration. Additional ongoing promotions, such as Parlay Prince, free bets, crypto deposit matches, and many others, are available, too. Just check the platform’s promotions pages at your leisure to see what’s on offer when you come to sign up.

Pros:

  • Unique parlay bonuses, including prize draws
  • Huge selection of ice hockey betting options
  • NFL promos throughout the season
  • Relatively low rollover requirement on welcome offer
  • Live betting suite

Cons:

  • Proposition markets lacking

3. Bovada – Most Impressive Alaska Sports Betting Site for Live Streaming

bovada sportsbook alaska

If you’re a sports betting Alaska resident who enjoys watching the game live in high-definition, you’ll want to try Bovada. This offshore sportsbook live streams select matches in high definition. But Bovada sweetens the deal further: Bettors can access the offshore site using their desktop computers or laptops and download the Bovada app onto their Android or iOS devices. In addition, the Bovada app is easy to navigate, making it a cinch for bettors to place bets while going about their day.

Bovada also enables bettors to wager using the live betting application even after the match has started. If you’re wondering what kind of sports the site offers, there are approximately 20 in total (depending on the time of year), ranging from the NBA, NFL, and MLB betting to water polo.

The welcome offer is a fairly standard deposit match bonus that can be unlocked in two parts (crypto and fiat) using Bovada bonus codes. The platform provides various options when it comes to deposit payments and withdrawals. We enjoyed that bettors can use cryptocurrencies or their debit and credit cards.

Pros:

  • Has a high wager volume
  • Features an Android and iOS-compatible mobile app
  • The site offers a variety of sports and leagues
  • Bettors can make use of various exciting promos
  • Offers high-definition live streaming of games

Cons:

  • The Bitcoin bonus is more impressive than the other welcome bonuses offered

4. MyBookie – Best Alaska Mobile Betting App

mybookie - alaska sports betting sites

If you are out and about a lot and find that this interferes with your ability to place your wagers, then MyBookie is an offshore Alaska sports betting platform you may like to try. MyBookie features an impressive sports betting app that users can install on their Android and iOS devices by simply downloading it from their app stores. This app provides the ideal solution to those who can’t always access a computer or laptop by placing the option to wager at your fingertips. However, if you prefer using a computer, MyBookie features an online platform.

Another feature of the Mybookie Sportsbook site that we really enjoyed was the high-definition live streaming of sports matches and games. In offering this, the offshore sportsbook makes it simple for fans to catch the game when they’re on the go.

If you happen to miss the pre-game wagering, you’re in luck. MyBookie features live betting and allows bettors to place their wagers even after the match has begun. Additionally, bettors can wager on US sports at both professional and collegiate levels and have access to various international sports and leagues.

Pros:

  • Offers high-definition live streaming of games
  • Comes with a mobile app
  • Accepts live betting
  • Provides generous promos and bonuses
  • Offers excellent prop bets

Cons:

  • The sports selection is lacking

5. BetUS – Best Selection of Welcome Bonuses for Online Sports Betting in Alaska

betus - alaska sportsbooks

If you live in Alaska and want to participate in sports betting, an offshore site like BetUS provides an excellent option. This reputable site offers players various features that make sports wagering online more enjoyable. BetUS has its client’s best interests at heart, from a plethora of popular teams and leagues to accepting prop bets for a unique wagering experience.

And, if exciting BetUS bonuses draw you in, you’ll find the site’s massive welcome bonuses a real treat. However, as a returning player, you won’t receive much in the way of repeat player promos, so we suggest making the most of the sign-up bonuses.

Players wanting to take advantage of these bonuses can access the platform on their home computers or laptops, or by downloading the Android and iOS compatible BetUS app on their mobile devices. With this handy app, bettors can wager their bets wherever they are and have mobile access to the site’s picks and tips, located in The Locker Room and on BetUS-TV.

Pros:

  • Features a wide assortment of leagues and sports
  • Comes with a mobile app for on-the-go betting
  • Allows for prop bets
  • Exceptionally generous promos
  • Free picks & tips in The Locker Room

Cons:

  • No impressive bonuses for existing players

6. XBet – Top Offshore Sportsbook for Newcomers

xbet - sports betting alaska

If you’re new to offshore sports betting, XBet makes the perfect introductory site. XBet is known for being easy to navigate and simple to use, so as a new player, you can focus on wagering your bets and not on understanding how the site operates. In addition, XBet offers Alaska sports betting on both computer and mobile platforms, and we found this highly reputable site offered fast payouts in traditional currency and cryptocurrencies during testing.

XBet offers bettors various sports to wager on, from the Olympics to the major leagues. In recent years, it has really increased the number of lines available, especially when it comes to prop betting. If you want to register with XBet, you’ll be pleased to know that the process is straightforward and takes only minutes. However, remember that you’ll need to verify your ID, as the site needs your details to accept your deposits and payout your earnings.

In addition, we found the customer service provided by XBet to be better than most. Contacting the customer service team is simple and can be done via email or live chat. This service makes it relatively straightforward to resolve any problems you may encounter.

Pros:

  • Offers an impressive selection of sports
  • Top-quality customer service
  • Provides live betting
  • Easy to use for new bettors
  • Offers excellent odds

Cons:

  • The bonuses aren’t as impressive as those offered by competing sites

How We Rank The Best Alaska Sports Betting Apps

Our dedicated team conducts thorough research before rating and ranking the top Alaska sports betting platforms. To better understand our ranking criteria, read on.

sports lens rating stars

Licensing and Security

Sportslens won’t endorse sportsbooks that don’t hold a valid, verifiable license in a respected jurisdiction. We also ensure that player data is protected as standard and favor platforms that provide SSL encryption and two-factor authentication.

Betting Markets and Odds

Our experienced team of sports gamblers ensures each reviewed sportsbook features an extensive array of markets covering Alaska’s favorite leagues, including the NHL, NBA, NCAA, and NFL. We have yet to locate any markets for Alaska teams such as the Bears, Avalanche, and Nanooks, but we ensure that props, futures, and live betting are available for the major leagues, compare the odds, and factor all of this into our ranking process.

Betting Bonuses

We conduct thorough evaluations of all welcome and ongoing promotions we encounter at Alsaka sports betting apps and sites, ranking platforms -in part- based on the attractiveness of their bonus offerings. Additionally, we assess crucial variables, such as playthrough requirements and other terms, to ensure players have a good chance of cashing out their bonus funds.

Live Betting & Streaming

Live betting and streaming are highly sought-after features both here in Alaska and nationwide. Because of this, our team tends to heavily favor platforms that provide rapid line updates, comprehensive in-house statistics, and high-definition video streaming of select events.

Payment Methods

Sportslens’ ranking criteria also consider the diversity of deposit and withdrawal options specifically available within Alaska. We prioritize platforms offering a wide variety of options, including fiat (credit and debit cards), cryptocurrencies, and e-wallets, while also minimizing transaction fees and charges.

Mobile Betting Experience

With exactly zero legal native sportsbook apps in Alaska, our team greatly emphasizes mobile-friendly offshore platforms. We rigorously test each platform on mobile devices, prioritizing those offering mobile/app-specific bonuses and providing identical markets to their desktop equivalents.

Customer Support

Responsive and dependable customer support is paramount, and we prefer Alaska bookmakers that offer 24/7 live chat support, prompt email or telephone responses, and comprehensive FAQs and betting guides on their websites.

How to Bet on Sports in Alaska

If this is your first time using an offshore betting site like BetOnline, navigating can be tricky. We have put together this quick guide that explains step-by-step how to sign up, make a deposit, and finally wager a bet. So, let’s get started!

1. Sign Up for a BetOnline Account

On your computer, open the BetOnline website. On the top right of the home page, you’ll see a green “Join Us” button. Click on it, and the site will divert you to the “Create Account” page.

On this page, complete your details to create your BetOnline account. You can then use these credentials to log in.

BetOnline Step One: Sign Up

2. Make Your First Deposit

Once you have used your new credentials to sign in to BetOnline, you can make a deposit. Making a deposit places money in your account and will allow you to wager a bet.

Navigating to the “Banking” button at the top right of the home page and clicking on it will open the “Banking” page. Next, you’ll need to choose your payment method from the drop-down menu provided. After making your selection, click the “Deposit Now” button. Then, follow the prompts to complete your payment and finish up the process.

BetOnline Step Two: Make a Deposit

3. Choose and Place Your Bet

Now, you can place your bet on BetOnline. First, click the “Sports” button on the top left of the screen on the home page. You will be redirected to the sports page, where all the different games you can wager on are presented.

Then, when you have chosen your sports match, click on it. A Betting Slip located on the right of the screen will populate with the information about your chosen game. Next, on this slip, type in your bet amount. Finally, click “Place Bet.” And that’s it! BetOnline will do the rest.

BetOnline Step Three: Place Your Bet

Alaska Betting Apps & Mobile Sites for iPhone & Android

Using the best Alaska betting apps is actually pretty simple. Still, there are a couple of things you should know about the operating system or device you are using, with a particular focus on iPhones and Androids.

Android

If you’re using an Android device, you can have a smooth and easy betting experience by using the recommended Alaska betting apps mentioned in our guide. Log in through your preferred browser, like Google Chrome, on your Android device, and you can access all these sites without any hassle.

These apps are made specifically for Android, so you won’t have any compatibility problems. However, to get the best out of the sportsbooks and live betting features, it’s important to keep your device software updated. This way, you’ll always have the latest features and enjoy the best betting experience possible.

iPhone

Using Safari as your browser makes it really easy to browse and use the options on these platforms. Creating an account is simple, and the processes are designed to be user-friendly, so it’s an easy experience. Like with Android, it’s important to keep your iPhone or Apple device software updated to ensure the best performance.

Top 5 Regulated Alaska Betting Apps

Unfortunately, there are no regulated sports betting apps in Alaska right now, as the state has not yet legalized online sports betting. That’s not a problem for all you Alaska sports betting fans, though, as you can take your pick from our list of the best offshore platforms that are arguably better than most regulated sites anyway.

Mobile Site vs. App for Betting in Alaska

There are pros and cons to using both mobile sites and official mobile betting apps. Both are definitely ideal for betting on the go, but let’s check out some of their key strengths.

Mobile Site

What we like:

  • Doesn’t take up space on your device
  • Offers all the same features as the desktop version of the sportsbook
  • Can be accessed on any type of mobile device

What we don’t:

  • It’s not as easily accessible as a dedicated app

Mobile App

What we like:

  • Offers convenience for your betting needs
  • Will often give you app-exclusive promos and bonuses
  • The software is sleek and smooth

What we don’t:

  • App performance can vary with the quality of your device

How to Create a Betting App for a Sportsbook in Alaska

We know it’s not ideal that you can’t download official streamlined apps for the sites we reviewed in our guide, but honestly, it’s not the end of the world. Conclusion on Alaska Online Sports Betting

Sports betting in Alaska remains illegal. The hope is for the HB385 legislature presented by Rep. Wool in 2022 to be made legal at some point in 2024. However, transparently, at the time of writing, whether or not this latest bill will be a success is open to debate. We advise you not to get your hopes up just yet.

Fortunately, although online and in-person sports betting is restricted, Alaska residents have other options. Offshore sports betting sites, for instance, provide Alaskans with plenty of opportunities to wager on their favorite teams. So, what are you waiting for? Sign up with BetOnline today and claim a rewarding welcome bonus to get you started.
