Barcelona’s Deco watched by Newcastle United and Manchester City

The press have long linked Deco with a move away from Barcelona, and at this point, AC Milan, Manchester City and Newcastle United have all been strongly linked to the Portuguese midfielder. I think it’s a bit unfair on him considering what he’s achieved at the club and with all the speculation if Barcelona wanted to sell him they should have done so earlier (he’s not going to fetch that much now, is he?).

Manchester City need a central midfielder but in my view they need an Essien or a Sissoko than a creative player in the Deco / Scholes mould (they need to replace Barton, period). City have been after several midfielders and they will undoubtedly sign someone in the next couple of days – however Deco won’t be one of them.

In Newcastle United’s case though, Deco would be the ideal signing. He’s the big name player the fans have been promised, he’s a creative midfielder and with Smith, Butt and Barton already in the midfield he will bring something new, something missing from the Newcastle United midfield.

Neither team can offer him Champions League football right now, and probably not in the next couple of years either. That is bound to play into Deco’s considerations and he might stay on at Barcelona and wait for a move to Champions League club. From the player’s point of view, neither Newcastle United nor Manchester City can offer him what he wants in the next 2 years – titles.

Anyone else in the Premiership willing to take a punt on Deco?
