Aston Villa have announced the signing of James Milner from Newcastle United – the England U-21 international has penned a four-year deal at Villa after passing a medical at Villa Park.
Villa have been after Milner for a couple of years now – and the youngster finally forced the issue by handing in a transfer request earlier this month. Other clubs were rumoured to be interested but the bottom line is that Milner joins Reo-Coker, Agbonlahor and Young (amongst others) at Aston Villa as part of young and vibrant team with serious aspirations for a second consecutive top-6 finish this season.
Newcastle probably don’t have the time to sign a replacement so it leaves the squad a bit weak in case of injuries.
Will this help Milner’s international career? Playing with fellow young England players who have played at the U-21 level and aspire to make the step up to the senior team on a permanent basis will certainly help, as will playing with the likes of Gareth Barry who will be lining up for England in the next two World Cup qualifiers.
Best of luck to Milner, and hopefully Newcastle won’t be too bad off after this move.
