Arsenal transfer news

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed Wojciech Szczesny is closing in on a loan move to AS Roma.

The Gunners signing Petr Cech from Chelsea earlier this summer and the arrival of the Czech Republican international has seen Szczesny drop down the pecking order behind David Ospina.

The Colombian international cemented his place in the starting lineup in the second half of the last season after a poor display from Szczesny. With lack of playing time and the Frenchman having other options in front of the goal, he has allowed him to join the Italian club on a loan deal.

“He could go on loan to Roma. We are pretty much done, it’s down to paperwork. As long as that’s not over the line, anything can happen,” Wenger said at his pre-Emirates Cup press conference.

“Szczesny is a top-class goalkeeper and we have three top goalkeepers. If one of the goalkeepers can play somewhere then it’s good. I believe he will have a future at Arsenal because I personally rate him highly. I put him in the first team at the age of 20 and he already has huge experience.

“I don’t want that experience he got when he was very young to be wasted and that is why I gave him the opportunity.

I believe Roma is a big club and they play in the Champions League, play in a very different championship as well and that is a big experience for him and he is 25 years old. But the experience he already has at his age is fantastic.”

Arsenal’s official website also confirmed Szczesny move to Roma is subjected to medical and also regulatory processes.

After having a successful second half of the 2014-15 season, it should be seen whether Ospina will settle for a place on the bench, especially after the arrival of Cech to the Emirates.

After winning every competition with Chelsea, Cech has a wealth of experience under his belt and he is likely to be the key player in between the sticks for the north London club next summer. A loan move for Szczesny is the best option for both the player and also Arsenal.
