Early predictions of Mexico being thrashed at the hands of Argentina were widely off the mark as the South Americans huffed and puffed their way through 98 minutes before Maxi Rodriguez sealed a win through one of the goals of the tournament.

After the Argentina-Holland match it had been quite obvious that any opposition team that would be able to shackle Riquelme and deny Argentina space in the centre of the park would be able to possibly beat them. Last Night Mexico almost got there, using the added support of Marquez pushing forward to shut down the Argentine midfield and denying them the space that they used to such deadly effect against Serbia and Montenegro.

Mexicans didn’t stop there. Apart from shutting down Riquelme and Cambiasso, they kept hitting Argentina down the flanks and were lightning fast on the counter-attack throughout the game. This was exactly what Holland had done to Argentina, and it was painfully obvious that Peckerman had not learned the lesson.

It was hilarious to hear ESPN commentators describe Mexico as a defensive unit when they have been an overwhelmingly attacking side throughout the group stages. If it wasn’t obvious before that these morons are absolutely clueless when it comes to football, it was now.

After a frantic start, the two sides negated each other brilliantly (Mexico just did not have the firepower to really bother Argentina) until Maxi’s fantastic goal settled things in extra time.

Argentina scrape through, but Germany would have watched this match with a lot of interest and surely unless Argentina change their tactics, Germany will have a good plan on beating them.
