There’s no crying in football, right?

Don’t tell that to Sampdoria’s Antonio Cassano, the skilled but obviously attitude-challenged forward, who’s had his share of fits and outbursts in the past with Roma and Real Madrid, but took it to a new level in a weekend Serie A tie against Fiorentina, showing that he’s not afraid to cry right in the middle of a football match.

After Fiorentina’s Adrian Mutu (this post is full of the misfits, isn’t it?!) scored in the 39th to make it 1-1, Cassano tried to address the referee about a no-call (that would’ve, or at least should’ve gone against the shove-happy striker) in a not so subtle fashion, earning a yellow card, but that’s just the beginning.

The fact that the card means he’ll miss his side’s upcoming match against his old club Roma might be what brought on his forthcoming dramatics, but whatever it is, next came a performance that I will personally seek to get him an Oscar nomination for – whining, throwing himself on the ground and beating the defenseless grass, and then kicking it up a notch by sobbing for the next minute.

After realizing that he had to get back to his day job sooner or later, Cassano must have thought of lollipops, bunnies, and Ferraris, and the wee wittle man was all better.

And, keeping up with that Cassano-ness, he scored the tying goal in the 69th minute on a lovely header, as the match ends in a 2-2 draw. He may or may not wind up being the future of Italian football, as he once was thought to be, but hey, at least he’s got a future in the performing arts, which pays well, from what I hear.

Cassano’s histronics in full:
