According to the betting, the main danger to Henry De Bromhead’s wonder-mare Honeysuckle (8/11) is an as yet unraced horse this season from the Willie Mullins stable. The favourite and one of the top Rachael Blackmore Cheltenham rides shortened in the Champion Hurdle odds after a completing her hat-trick in the Irish equivalent at Leopardstown in early February and the defection of opponents.

Mullins Trying for Champion Hurdle Win with Appreciate It After Year Off

Appreciate It (4/1 from 8/1) was the runaway winner of the Supreme Novices Hurdle over the Champion Hurdle course and distance at the Festival last season. A slight setback has delayed his chasing career, so Mullins keeps him over the smaller obstacles. He remains one of the top Paul Townend Cheltenham rides at the meeting, however. Mullins’ stable jockey is favourite for the most Festival winners in the saddle this year.

Appreciate It missed the Dublin Racing Festival, however, and won’t compete on the track before the big race. Past Cheltenham results show no horse has won the Champion Hurdle first time out in recent times. If Mullins and Townend can pull this off on Appreciate It, then it will be one of the greatest training feats ever.

The defection of Sharjah impacted Champion Hurdle odds considerably as he finished runner-up in the last couple of years. Honeysuckle no longer has to worry about the Morgiana Hurdle and Matheson Hurdle winner this time, though. Echoes In Rain also forfeiting leaves master horse racing handler Mullins with just Appreciate It and Saint Roi (40/1) in the field with the latter flattering to deceive since his 2020 County Hurdle win.

Epatante the Best of British

While the first three in the Champion Hurdle betting are Irish, previous winner Epatante is next (14/1). Nicky Henderson and JP McManus’ mare landed this two years ago but has since been eclipsed by Honeysuckle. Kept apart from the favourite in the UK, Epatante has dead-heated in the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle and then outright defeated Not So Sleepy when regaining Kempton’s Christmas Hurdle on Boxing Day.

Her Champion Hurdle odds shortening is more about the defections than form. There’s no obvious reason why Epatante should turn the tables with Honeysuckle here. Other British-based runners entered in the Champion Hurdle are 20/1 and bigger on horse racing betting sites like Virgin Bet.

Teahupoo cut in 2022 Champion Hurdle odds and best of five-year-olds

A number of five-year-olds, many of which contested the Triumph Hurdle and other top National Hunt juvenile races last season, come next. Teahupoo looks the pick of Gordon Elliott’s remaining pair still among Champion Hurdle entries here following an impressive win the Red Mills Trial Hurdle at Gowran Park.

Robcour’s representative is now 9/1 (slashed from 33/1). Zanahiyr (25/1 from 10/1), fourth in the Triumph last seen with four subsequent seconds in Grade 1 company to his name, also remains in the race for Cullentra House.

Adagio (20/1 from 33/1) ran two cracking races in defeat in the Triumph and then on handicap debut in the Greatwood Hurdle over the Champion Hurdle course and distance for David Pipe. He missed the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury, however, but battled when chasing home Goshen in the Kingwell around Wincanton. Adagio remains the second-best British runner in the Cheltenham betting odds for this Festival race, though.

Tommy’s Oscar a market mover

Most betting sites slashed major improver Tommy’s Oscar (33/1 from 50/1), who has progressed out of handicaps. Trained by Ann Hamilton for owner-husband Ian, the assessor now rates this horse 156. Connections are looking at the Champion Hurdle now following an easy success in the Grade 2 New One Unibet Hurdle at Haydock extended his run to four consecutive wins.

A few rank outsiders remain in the Champion Hurdle odds including the aforementioned Not So Sleepy, who dead-heated at the highest level in the Fighting Fifth. That may just have been a flash in the pan in atrocious conditions for Hughie Morrison’s unreliable runner. It’s also something all Cheltenham non runner no bet bookies have factored in to their prices at 100/1. Glory And Fortune is also a rank outsider for Tom Lacey despite winning the Betfair Hurdle.

Defections show lack of strength-in-depth

Other notable defections include another of the past Champion Hurdle winners in dual race hero Buveur D’Air. The enigmatic Goshen, and Irish quintet Abacadabras, Aspire Tower, Cask Mate, Echoes In Rain and Saint Felicien are also scratched alongside Song For Someone. Last year’s Triumph Hurdle hero Quilixios also defected at the penultimate declaration stage.
