Chelsea are reportedly deep in talks with German side Wolfsburg over a deal for Swiss international defender Ricardo Rodriguez.
According to Italian website, TuttoMercadoWeb, Chelsea are in advanced stages of negotiation with the Bundesliga outfit, having already agreed to sell them winger Kevin De Bruyne.
Although not made official by either club, De Bruyne’s transfer to Wolfsburg is widely considered to be a done deal, with Chelsea using the opportunity to open talks with the German side over Rodriguez.
The Italian report claims that a deal is already well on the way to completion, and there will be further meetings between officials from the two clubs in the next few days.
With Ashley Cole winding down his career, and Ryan Bertrand not considered to be at the required standard, a move for a young, vibrant left-back has always been on the cards; and now it seems Jose Mourinho has chosen his target.
The highly rated 21-year-old, who is valued between €20-€25m, has been courted by a number of top clubs, including Manchester United, but Chelsea seem to have jumped to the very front of the queue.
However, Rodriguez’ agent Gianluca Di Domenico said at the beginning of the month that Wolfsburg would not sell the youngster in the January transfer window,
“Maybe after the World Cup in June [he can leave]. But it will not be easy as many clubs are interested in him.”
With this in mind, coupled with the latest report of ongoing negotiations between the two parties, the most likely scenario here would be for Chelsea to secure a verbal agreement with Wolfsburg, and for Rodriguez to move to the Premier League after the World Cup this summer.
What do you think? Will the De Bruyne sale secure the Swiss international’s signature? Let me know in the comments below…
